The earliest distinctive European fortification that reflected feudal social organization and warfare was the motte-and-bailey castle. This type of castle emerged in the 10th and 11th centuries and consisted of a raised earth mound (the motte) topped with a wooden or stone keep, surrounded by an enclosed courtyard (the bailey) that housed various buildings and fortifications.
